The 1925 Santa Barbara Earthquake.

Ninety years ago this week our beloved Santa Barbara was heavily damaged by a magnitude 6.8 earthquake. Thirteen people were killed and few buildings on State Street escaped damage.

In an odd twist of fate, the earthquake proved to be a commercial boon to Santa Barbara’s business community and is credited with giving Santa Barbara its distinctive architecture. City officials seized the opportunity to enforce stricter commercial building codes requiring the Spanish-Moorish style of architecture that has made Santa Barbara a popular tourist generation over the last near century.
