Fifty years ago this month, Andy Warhol felt the allure of the Golden State. He set out with friends Taylor Mead and Wynn Chamberlain for Los Angeles to attend his exhibition at the Ferus Gallery. Andy didn’t know how to drive so Meade and Chamberlain shared the driving duties from New York. Although Warhol had traveled around the world in the 1950s, this road trip marked his first time west of Pennsylvania in the U.S. Warhol recalled it was “the most exciting thing that ever happened to me. The further West we drove, the more Pop everything looked.” Here’s a look at Warhol in California.
